Windows Phone 7 hits Technical Preview

Microsoft recently began shipping out thousands of Windows Phone 7 test units from LG and Samsung to developers all over the world. This was after the Windows Phone engineering team has hit a very meaningful milestone; one that they are calling technical preview. According to the Windows Phone team “Before release of this milestone, the software has undergone extensive testing – in daily use by more than 1000 people at Microsoft who have been using WP7 as their only phone for the past several months, and the more than 10,000 devices in our test labs. We’ve been testing usability, battery life, network connectivity, and many other metrics for a long time. As a result of that work, I hope you will find the experience to be of surprisingly high quality.”

Windows Phone 7 seeks to step away the barriers between you and your information, almost from the very first click. One of the very first screens you will see on startup is one asking you to sign in with a Windows Live ID. This connects your phone with your Windows Live and/or Hotmail e-mail account, calendaring, SkyDrive cloud storage, your Zune account, your Xbox Live gamertag and more. For now, many of the Windows Live benefits can only be realized if you are using the Windows Live Wave 4 services. Most of these services are still in beta, but should all be live by the time Windows Phone 7 ships.
