Tell us who you are?
My name is Daron Yöndem. I’m a Microsoft Regional Director, currently a Silverlight MVP leading INETA Turkey. I’m the founder of Deveload Software, an ISV based in Istanbul. For the last five years we are focused on UX as a .NET house. We are building Silverlight and WPF apps including rich multitouch implementations. I have two books about ASP.NET AJAX and one about Internet Explorer 8 development.

Tell us about your MVP history, when were you first awarded?
I got awarded on 2008 as an ASP.NET MVP and had the chance to be one of the first five Silverlight MVPs in the world. It was a great luck to have the new competency declared at the same moment as my renewal period
I’m an MVP who likes capturing screencast, writing articles on local User Groups and physical interaction which is (for a computer geek) seminars and conferences about technical beauties. I feel very lucky leading INETA Turkey and our 30+ User Groups. We have annual events with different concepts where we get 10+ INETA Speakers and lots of MVPs contributing to the community.

What do you do in order to keep up with latest tools and technologies?
I use them! In our company we are focused on using the latest technology. In other words we are focused on choosing the right customers who can somehow absorb the benefits and drawbacks of using the latest technology. In order to keep up with the latest tools first of all you need to keep yourself up to date by following online (blogs) and offline (conferences including PDC, MIX, TechEd) content. Then you should build your own experience stack which can only happen with the real world implementation of your memorized theoretical info.
Finally it’s important to be able to sell it Selling the implementation of the latest technology can be seen as a high risk activity and actually it is. However this is the most fun part which will grant a huge experience to you and your team.

What does being an MVP mean to you?
It means “hard work”! Getting the award is just a start point you get. After being an MVP you should fulfill the expectations of the eyes looking at you from the whole community. The title “MVP” is already very valuable for most of the community members and the industry. It is our job as MVPs to elevate both the title itself and the value inside. This is possible through hard working and sharing “more” technical knowledge in the mean of both quantity and quality.

What do you do when you are not building software’s?
Ahhh.. Ehhh… I consume! I mean.. If I’m not building software I should be using some other software at that moment as a consumer I’m not a no-lifer but building software is both my job and my free-time fun! Ok ok I confess! I played WOW (World Of Warcraft) for a long time. But! it was just to test how multiplayer gaming works from a consumers point of view R&D always…

If you could ask Steve Ballmer one question about Microsoft, what would it be?
What’s next? (I know he will understand me )

Had a chance to attend “MVP Global Summit”? When and how was your experience?
I will be attending this year (2010). MVPs are great people from all around the world. I had the chance to meet a lot of MVPs from different countries at PDC, TechEd North America, Europe, MIX and so on. They are just unpaid original evangelist! They know how it works, they know how to share and they believe on what they do with all hearth! This is the golden mix!

What makes you a great MVP?
I’m trying my best. Answering mails from the community, hosting sessions, organizing user groups and inter-user-group events, writing articles, books, capturing community interviews and screencast. But the most important thing is to be responsive! People are sending mails and looking for solutions to their problems desperately. I know they deserve a good answer in a timely manner. This is why I’m trying to manage my e-mails and pay careful attention to answer each one of them. I feel like “this makes me a good MVP”.

What you think about the MVP’s role in promoting technology in Middle East?
This is a tough question. The international aspect seems developing weakness because of the recent budget-cuts that we see nearly everywhere. It’s getting harder to cover the costs (TNE) and travel to different countries in order to share some content even if you are volunteer. As far as I see most of the MVPs are more active in their own country.
However, Thank God we have internet! and one of the fresh MVP benefits introduced in the last term is the Live Meeting accounts we have! This benefit provides a great way to access different countries all over the world. You can host webcasts on your own and share what you know! This will keep the rhythm up and running. MVP’s will be there to leverage the power of knowledge and new technology in MEA for always.

What is in your computer bag?
This question can lead to an unending list. Starting from my notebook, external hard drives, 3-5 USB memory sticks, presenter, Bluetooth mouse, back-up batteries (4xAAA and 4xAA), MVP badge, INETA notebook stickers (ready to distribute everywhere!), CAT5 cable! (2 meters), a camera and macro tripod… You want me go on?

If you get a chance to suggest one conference in Middle East? What would it be and why?
TechEd MEA is already happening this year. So better I wish for something different like MIX or PDC! PDC can be a little bit hard to arrange but a ReMIX will do.

What is the best thing that has happened since you have become an MVP?
Having 2k+ RSS followers! Honestly numbers are just numbers but I’m proud that people find my blog worth to follow. For me this proves the continuity and the quality of the content I create and makes me happy after spending 3 to 5 hours of work on just one blog post. And finally if you are looking for a more concrete answer the best thing that has happened to me is the TLC/ATE work I did at TechEd Europe! It was an awesome experience both in the mean of fighting against challenging questions and getting in touch with great MVPs within my competency. I really can’t forget the moments I lived there. Let’s describe it in another way; I had 4 hours daily duty but I never leaved the TLC booth during the conference! You imagine…

Naa I’m just happy here. But if I had the opportunity to travel anytime anywhere I want, I guess I would travel all over MEA and host sessions about UX in every User Group and University Give me that!

First of all learn the job and be the geek! Second spend all your free time to share what you learned! This is the trick, learn, share! And do this 24h/7days.

Ahmad Barqawi, the newly selected Microsoft Student Partner from Petra University worked with the local .Net club members and Petra University supervisors to launch the first .net club at Petra University. GDC’09 has been concluded few weeks back in Riyadh where it has been attended by over 3,200 technical professionals. Some attendees came from different regions of Saudi Arabia and from neighboring Gulf countries. GDC’09 has been sponsored by top technical solution and service providers like SSS IT, Link.NET, Nesma, Sure Technologies, New Horizons, Zidny, ExecuTrain. It was also been sponsored by Nas Air (regional airline) and Jarir Bookstore (largest retailer in Saudi). A full team of researchers from one of the top universities in Saudi (King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals) have attended the event to showcase one of the most famous solutions on Windows Mobile.

In GDC’09, more than 70 deep technical sessions have been delivered by more than 23 local and global top notch technical speakers. GDC has been covered by top local newspapers and by Al-Arabia TV (MBC) station. Most feedback that was received from many attendees agreed that 3 days for GDC’09 was not enough. GDC’09 included different delivery mechanisms including breakout sessions, interactive chalktalk sessions, as well as technology workshops. The Community Lounge and Expert Booth was one of the most popular visited areas in GDC’09. Many community leads, members and experts were available for the whole duration of GDC’09 event.

Egypt SharePoint User Group and .NetWork User Group recently organized SharePoint 2010 TechDay at Dar El Deyafa, Ain Shams University. TechDays is a new type of user group gathering where it consists of 2+ sessions talking about a specific technology from the basic to advanced levels going in sequence to expose audience to different areas of that technology.

Marwan Tarek started the event with a great introduction to SharePoint 2010, discussing about the upcoming features, business collaboration platform, technologies mapping, SharePoint foundation & evolution, server/client requirements and others changes to the offerings.

Second presentation was by Mohamed Yehia which was targeted towards giving developers an update on the changes with Visual Studio 2010, which will give them some amazing time-saving functionality when it comes to customizing SharePoint.These activites are a great way for the community to interconnect and share their knowledge of SharePoint.

Creating User Group or technical groups is not easy step. It requires lot of time and resources to find people who are interested in working with you as volunteers and successfully creating a trust in your group members minds. But once everything is up and running the result is great. So while answering the question I was able to note down the things and resources to get help from. It is given below.

• Name the User Group and define your scope, objectives and target audience.

• Get Volunteer/Community Geeks on board – You need to define a Board build a relationship between the volunteers who are interested to be part of such a group and designate positions and responsibilities.

• Distribute Roles according to Skills and availability

• Create Check Lists of Tasks

• Design Group Logo and Moto

• Try to find a Local Microsoft Community Lead or MVP to guide you and present you some contacts.

• Do board meeting in the early weeks to discuss user group topics and vision for 6 months at least.

• Create a Facebook/Online Group Site and publish your Group with basic introduction to get peoples interest and on-board.

• Start online discussions and sharing information e.g. videos, blogs, links etc. using YouTube or your personal blog sites.

• Register your user group to INETA, GITCA, UGSS, SQL Pass, ISPA or any other type of organization related to your UG.

• UGSS provides around a good amount as financial support and link to lot of community events including community members site which helps to user groups to do offline events. This will also provide you’re a free SharePoint Based Web Site as your website placeholder on the internet to upload and manage group information other than Facebook. Create a Signup page on this site to get people register for the event.

• Try to arrange some sponsors for your community e.g. Top IT Companiess or contact Local Microsoft Office to arrange giveaways and MS Marketing/Reading Material.

• Prepare for Offline event or user group meeting. Define period of meetings like monthly or bi-monthly.

• Create account at www.eventbrite.com to manage your Event invitations and events (e.g. http://rcsoctober.eventbrite.com).

• Take pictures during the board meetings and events and publish the agenda and outcome of the meeting on the group website.

• Create a YouTube Channel to upload video, trainings and interviews. SharePoint Hosting is very expensive to upload this stuff. Use Facebook Group pictures to upload pictures.

• Try to contact Local MS Developer Evangelist to get Official MS Support for taking your UG to next level.

• Link your groups with publishing groups like SAMS, O’Reilly etc to get free books for your community and discounts for your members.

• Once your user group has done something send some information to MicrosoftFeed. The reach of this group is deep inside Microsoft.

This all looks like a long list of things but as I told you earlier UG creation is a long process. What I have described above is what I have leant myself but If you think that we should add more thing please do let me know or post as comment. I am sure this will add more value. Tell us who you are?

My name is Saifullah Shafiq. I am a SharePoint Server MVP. I am a SharePoint consultant and author. I have been writing technical programming articles/tutorials since 1999. My technical articles have been published on 62 different programming related web sites. I have also written for magazines, both paper-based and online. I am founder of SharePoint Pakistan User Group, which is the first and only SharePoint related user community in Pakistan. We started this group in 2006. Currently it has over 450 members.

Tell us about your MVP history, when were you first awarded?
I got my first MVP award in 2007. I got renewed in 2008 and 2009. It felt really good to be honored with an award. I have been doing volunteer work since 1999 but this was the first time I was recognized by the Microsoft for my community work. There were only a handful of MVPs in Pakistan in 2006. The most prominent were Saqib Ilyas, Adnan Hashmi and Hammad Rajoub.

What do you do in order to keep up with latest tools and technologies?
I read books and blogs to keep myself up to date. Technical blogs are an excellent way of keeping oneself up to date. I also attend conferences and technical events.

What does being an MVP mean to you?
It’s an honor. It keeps me motivated. Honestly speaking, it’s not easy to be an MVP. It requires lot of hard work and commitment on your part. You don’t do it for money. You do it as a passion, to help the community. Many people ask me these questions. How do you become an MVP? Is it easy? Is it difficult? I tell them it’s all hard work and your love for the community. You share your knowledge with the community. You help them by answering their technical questions. You have to spend time.

What do you do when you are not building software’s?
I am an active blogger. I write technical blogs. I write articles. I try to learn new tools and techniques. I love going to technical events. Personally, I like dining out. I like music. I was very fond of watching Pakistani TV dramas, now I don’t get enough time. I love Pakistani pop music. When I am not writing software, I am listening to music. Honestly speaking, I sometimes also listen to music while writing code.

Yes, I attended MVP Global Summit in 2008. It was a wonderful experience. I met MVPs from all over the world. It was an excellent socializing event. Visiting Microsoft campus during the summit and meeting different IT teams was also an interesting experience.

What makes you a great MVP?
Well, I don’t know if I am a “great” MVP or not but I know one thing for sure that I work very hard. I write technical blogs and articles for the users. I answer their questions in newsgroups, forums, and in my own user group.

What you think about the MVP’s role in promoting technology in Middle East?
Well, I know lots of MVPs from the Middle East. They are very hard working and they are brilliant. Unfortunately, MVPs from the Middle East did not have the same opportunities to promote technology as MVPs in North America and Europe had. The number of conferences held in Middle East is far less than that of Europe or America. Still Middle East MVPs have been active on different fronts and they have been promoting technology by arranging and attending user group meetings, local events and through their blogs.

What is in your computer bag?
Business cards, pens, emergency medicine (pain killers, etc), print-outs of two chapters of my upcoming SharePoint book.

Who are your top 5 favorite Middle East MVPs?
This is tough. As I have mentioned earlier, all MVPs are brilliant. To name a few is really difficult. Ok, I will name five MVPs from my own field, that is, SharePoint. Shady Khorshed, Muhanad Omar, Mohammad Zaki, Marwan Tarek, Rehman Gul.

If you get a chance to suggest one conference in Middle East? What would it be and why?
Best Practices conference! This is the conference where experts share their real world experiences. You don’t learn mere theory in this conference. You get to know real world experiences that can save you lot of time when deploying products in your organizations.

What is the best thing that has happened since you have become an MVP?
Best thing is I have got more recognition. I get job offers from different companies. I get book writing offers.

I’m Adil Mughal. I’m Microsoft MVP for Visual C#. I’m leading two most influential User Groups in Pakistan “DevNext” and “Emerging .NET Devs”. I’m Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist and participate actively in community through organizing and speaking at different events. Besides contributing in Community, I work at Development Executive at Telenor Pakistan as my full time job.

Recently in Mid 2009

What do you do in order to keep up with latest tools and technologies?
Watch webcasts, recorded sessions of several technology conferences and other events, and reading blogs of people at Microsoft and other MVPs etc.

What does being an MVP mean to you?
Being MVP is like a status in the community. People expect a lot from you when you are a MVP, they can ask any question related to Microsoft and expect a healthy response from you either it’s related to technology or certifications or troubleshooting or even some information about Microsoft. So I really need to get myself geared up as much as possible.

What do you do when you are not building software’s?
When I’m not at work, I usually spend time in learning new technologies or planning some UG events or spending time with friends/colleagues.

If you could ask Steve Ballmer one question about Microsoft, what would it be?
How ahead Microsoft Research department is, from industry?

Had a chance to attend “MVP Global Summit”? When and how was your experience?
Nope but I look forward to be there in Feb 2010

What makes you a great MVP?
I think what great thing we are doing here in Pakistan is that we are reviving the communities and User Group
culture in Pakistan and as a result we almost organize events on monthly basis especially in Karachi. And of course leading two User Group is one of the reasons behind this.

What you think about the MVP’s role in promoting technology in Middle East?
I think MEA region is much behind as compare to North America region, when we talk about role of community, UGs and MVPs. People just don’t know much about these things and how communities can really help them and serve society as well. MVPs can play a vital role here and many MVPs are already contributing to community and promoting the sharing of expertise voluntarily.

What is in your computer bag?
External Hard Drive containing lots of video and recorded sessions , Microsoft Arc Mouse, Microsoft Pen and some printed stuff on technology.

If you get a chance to suggest one conference in Middle East? What would it be and why?

How can one be a part of MVP Club? Any suggestions for them?
Sharing voluntarily is the key to become MVP. Some people just start blogging and even publishing content which are not originally written by them, it won’t lead you becoming MVP. Also remember that there are two types of contribution offline and/or online. Online means blogs, websites, articles, forums etc and Offline means user groups, speaking etc. You may become a MVP due to your offline contribution or you may become MVP for your online contribution. Do whatever you like and whatever you are passionate about and serve the community.

Microsoft Feed is a great initiative especially for the community in the MEA region. There are several activities

I’m Marwan Tarek, Lead Solution Specialist and MOSS MVP since 2008. I’m working with SharePoint technologies since 2005 using SharePoint 2003, 2007 and now 2010. I am also Microsoft certified professional since 2001, MCSD, MCTS and MCPD in SharePoint Services and SharePoint server development and configuration. I am also the founder of Egypt SharePoint User Group, organizer and speaker in many SharePoint events in Egypt.

I was first awarded in 2008

What do you do in order to keep up with latest tools and technologies?
Writing blog posts, delivering sessions and trainings, reading a lot of blogs.

Yes, 2008 it was really amazing meeting other MVPs and Microsoft products teams. Discussing products roadmap what’s missing and provide them the developers’ feedback.

What makes you a great MVP?
Active on organizing events, speaker in a lot of events and helping a lot of developers in their issues with
SharePoint.

What you think about the MVP’s role in promoting technology in Middle East?
It is still amateur compared to what happening in Europe and US, it needs a lot of efforts and help from companies in the region.

Muhanad Omar

Consultant, trainer, speaker and community advocate, Muhanad Omar represents the International SharePoint Professionals Association (ISPA) within the Middle East, and is the Founder and Leader of the Jordan SharePoint User Group. In 2008, Muhanad was awarded the prestigious Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for his technical contributions to the SharePoint Community.

Abdurrahman Al-Husami

Abdurrahman Al-Husami is a SharePoint Specialist and Trainer. He has been implementing MOSS 2007 for the public sector for the past several years, and was on the team which implemented the Zain Portal, the first MOSS WCM site in Jordan. Husami holds a MCTS in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Tamer Nassrawin

Tamer Nassrawin is a Business Services Section Head for Nuqul Group. Riyadh SharePoint User Group, DevLifeStyle and CodeBetter communities recently collaborated to conduct the first ever Riyadh Community Summit on October 22, 2009 at the Microsoft Innovation Center, Alyamama University, Riyadh. During the event the speakers disclosed the latest technologies like Visual Studio 2010, BizTalk Server 2009, Visual Studio Team System and also provided the real world guidance on developing applications on top of SharePoint 2007, ASP.NET and BizTalk, Exploring Implementation and Integration scenarios and getting ready for SharePoint 2010.
