"HTML5 is the future of the web", says Microsoft!

Recently Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager of Internet Explorer said on the Internet Explorer blog that HTML5 will be the future of the web and that Internet Explorer would only support H.264 for its video tag.

He said “H.264 is an industry standard, with broad and strong hardware support. Because of this standardization, you can easily take what you record on a typical consumer video camera, put it on the web, and have it play in a web browser on any operating system or device with H.264 support”

Download Microsoft Expression Blend 4 Release Candidate

Expression Blend 4 enables you to create websites and applications based on Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4, and desktop applications based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) 3.5 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and WPF 4. Expression Blend provides support for prototyping, interactivity through behaviors, special Silverlight functionality, and on-the-fly sample data generation.

Expression Blend includes new behaviors that are quickly and easily configured. To support the development of line-of-business (LOB) applications, Expression Blend introduces support for Views and ViewModels.

Evolution of Bing Design

Recently at MIX10, Paul Ray, User Experience Manager at Bing showed the evolution of Microsoft Search Engine. It all started with MSN Search in 1998 which later on changed into Windows Live Search in 2006. It was further transformed into Live Search in 2006 and then finally Binged in Summer 2008. Bing was initially known as kumo, kiev and kieg.

Bing was designed focusing on delivering great results, richer & more organized experience and help accomplish key tasks more easily. Search results are organized into categories and finding the best way to enhance users sense of discovery, surprise, and delight while balancing engi­neering realities.

Orchard – a free, open source and community-focused CMS

Recently at MIX, Renaud Paquay, a Senior Developer Lead from Microsoft demoed Orchard. Orchard is a free, open source, community-focused project aimed at delivering applications and reusable components on the ASP.NET platform. This CMS platform built on ASP.NET MVC 2 and licensed under the new BSD license. It is also included in the ASP.NET Open Source Gallery under the CodePlex Foundation.

Orchard will create shared components for building ASP.NET applications and extensions, and specific applications that leverage these components to meet the needs of end-users, scripters, and developers. Some of the silent features of Orchard are:

  • Out of the Box Modules Like Blogs and Pages
  • Easy Module and Theme Development
  • Ability to Use/Develop/Share Modules

Windows Phone 7 Series User Interface Initial Proof of Concepts

Recently at MIX, Microsoft’s Chad Roberts, Michael Smuga and Albert Shum showed some of the initial user interface design concepts of Windows Phone 7 Series during their presentation on “Windows Phone UI and Design Language“. According to the team “Metro is our Design Language. We call it Metro because it’s modern and clean. It’s Fast and in Motion. It’s about Content and Typography and it’s entirely Autentic”

MIX10 – New Windows Phone 7 Series Promo

Recently at MIX, Microsoft showed a new Windows Phone 7 Series Promo with emphasis on end-to-end scenarios. According to iStartedSomething “This Star Trek-inspired video takes you in to the lives of Anna and Miles, two made-up “life maximizer” personalities that the WP7S team uses to craft their product for. Scenarios demonstrated in the video includes taking and sharing a photo, playing games, messaging, social networking, searching and navigation. These guys obviously have a lot of free time.”

Microsoft waived Windows Phone Marketplace registration fee for Students

DreamSpark and Windows Marketplace for Mobile have joined together bringing more free offerings to students. As if free software wasn’t enough, Microsoft is expanding its DreamSpark program by enabling students to sell Windows Phone applications in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

The DreamSpark program waives the $99 registration fee for the Windows Marketplace for Mobile to all verified students. Students now have the tools, services and platforms to get a head start on their careers.

Today at MIX, Microsoft showed its commitment to interoperability by announcing the support for a number of HTML5 specifications, including CSS3, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), XHTML parsing, and the video and audio tags using industry-standard (H.264/MPEG4 and MP3/AAC) codecs, among others.

Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer at Microsoft, unveiled the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview including expanded support for HTML5, hardware-accelerated graphics and text, and a new JavaScript engine. Together these allow developers to use the same markup and deliver graphically and functionally rich Web applications that take advantage of modern PC hardware through a modern operating system.

Internet Explorer 9 to support HTML5

As part of its commitment to interoperability, Microsoft detailed its support for a number of HTML5 specifications, including CSS3, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), XHTML parsing, and the video and audio tags using industry-standard (H.264/MPEG4 and MP3/AAC) codecs, among others.

In addition, Microsoft demonstrated a new JavaScript engine that uses the multiple cores of today’s modern chips to effectively manage computing resources and improve Web performance. By combining increased interoperability with a new JavaScript engine and Direct 2D technology, Internet Explorer 9 enables Web developers to provide users with richer experiences that render more quickly and consistently.

At Mix, Engadget got hold of the three Windows Phone 7 hardware all lined up. From left, we have the new unnamed Samsung slate that debuted at MIX, the just-for-demos unbranded Asus device that was the star at Mobile World Congress, and the LG slider codenamed as Panther.

New Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 Series Applications

Today at MIX, Microsoft also showed how developers and designers will be able to bring applications and games to market with a new Windows Phone Marketplace. The Marketplace features a panoramic design and active merchandising to increase the discoverability of games and applications, and supports one-time credit card purchases, mobile operator billing and advertising-funded applications. The Marketplace will also enable customers to try applications before buying them and allow developers to cross-promote their applications through deep linking.
