ITA joins Microsoft’s security co-operation programme

The Information Technology Authority (ITA) of Oman yesterday signed an agreement with Microsoft Oman to join its Security Co-operation Program (SCP). Through the agreement, ITA Oman and Microsoft aim to promote the security of information systems and networks in the Sultanate and to exchange information to assist in that effort. The Security Co-operation Programme is a no-fee programme that helps further strengthen Microsoft’s comprehensive approach to providing the technology and services that help enable secure computing environments to governments and citizens.

In addition, ITA Oman and Microsoft will work together to exchange information that can be used to better anticipate, help prevent and respond to information technology security attacks. The kind of data that will be exchanged include, information about publicly known and reported vulnerabilities, information about upcoming and released security updates to facilitate resource planning and deployment, security incident metrics, information on Microsoft product security, the Microsoft approach to security and its incident response process.

Microsoft Oman hosts ‘DigiGirlz Day’

DigiGirlzIn collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Microsoft Oman hosted its “Microsoft DigiGirlz Day” for the first time in the Sultanate. The event, which was hosted at the campus of the Middle East College of Information Technology (MECIT), one of the premiere academic institutions in the field of information technology, with a vision to inspire creative minds. The aim of the event is to increase the engagement of female students with technology within an educational framework and was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education and the academic community. Microsoft also hopes that this initiative will encourage more young women to pursue degrees and careers in computer science and computer engineering, with the ultimate goal of narrowing the gender gap in the industry.

Over 110 female students from grades 9-12 participated at this year’s event. During the event, a panel discussion was held where students had the opportunity to interact with women employed in the technology industry to gain exposure on careers in business and technology and to get an inside look at what it is like to work at Microsoft. In addition, two students from Umamaha School and one from Wadi Kabir School were the winners of the Digital Literacy competition held during the event.

Addressing the event, Suleiman Al Kindi, Deputy General Director of Information Technology from the Ministry of Education said, “The Microsoft DigiGirlz event is in line with the Ministry’s efforts to reach out to high school girls and increase female participation in the Science and Technology field. By hosting an event such as DigiGirlz, we aim to empower students to build successful careers for themselves and educate them on technology. DigiGirlz is an example of our strong partnership with Microsoft and we look forward to a continuous long-term association with them to inspire more females in the region to choose a science and technology based career.”

Microsoft Oman Previews New Technologies at Comex 2010

Microsoft Oman recently previewed a suite of its latest technologies including Office 2010, SQL Server 20008, Visio 2010 and Project 2010. The company’s new offerings were showcased to customers and partners at Comex, the largest telecom and technology show in the Sultanate of Oman.

Ahmad El Dandachi, Country Manager of Microsoft Oman said, “Microsoft is committed to providing innovative technology products and services that will provide the fuel to help reignite the engine of economic growth. We believe that our software solutions can help companies drive down costs and improve operations. This year is an exciting year from a product launch and innovation perspective and it will really lay the foundation for Microsoft in the region for the next two years. Microsoft Oman backs Comex 2010

Committed to providing innovative technology products and services to the country’s fast growing ICT market, Microsoft Oman signs on as a lead sponsor of Comex 2010, the largest IT, telecom and technology show in the Sultanate of Oman. A four-day ICT extravaganza, Comex 2010 will be held from April 26 to 30, 2010 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, whilst the two-day ICT Conference will be organised from April 27 to 28 at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Seeb.

Nick Hodge, Managing Director of OITE, the event organiser, said ”The support of Microsoft Oman has been a big boost to the Sultanate’s ICT event. As organisers, we are delighted with Microsoft’s continuous support to Comex which helps sustain the growth and development of the ICT sector.”

Oman’s Ministry of Education links students, parents and teachers to Microsoft’s Live@edu portal

Furthering its commitment to the development of a knowledge based society in Oman, Microsoft announced that the Oman Ministry of Education has deployed its Live@edu online offering across schools in the Sultanate. Live@edu is a free hosted service for K-12 and higher education institutions that provides students, staff and faculty with primary email addresses and a collaborative communications platform.

The Oman Ministry of Education first provisioned its teachers and administrators with e-mail, and soon after began providing the service to its more than 50,000 students. In addition, the Ministry is also taking advantage of other elements of the Live@edu suite of collaboration and productivity solutions including Windows Live SkyDrive, a cloud based file storage service that provides each user with 25 gigabytes of storage and Windows Live Messenger, for real-time messaging.

Commenting on the deployment, Khalid bin Sulaiman Al-Siyabi, Director General of IT, Ministry of Education from the Oman Ministry of Education, said, “As part of Oman’s continuing commitment to education, we wanted to integrate electronic communication into our schools. Our aim is to provide students with the highest levels of technical and professional training programs to give them the best opportunities once they graduate. An important part of that vision is creating an advanced learning environment across our campuses, by adopting solutions such as Microsoft Live@edu that integrates the power of technology with our curriculum. We have a strong relationship with Microsoft, and we look forward to our long-term association with them to help the Ministry realize our vision of providing high-quality education.”
